The short inland runs
The coast-and-mountains tasting at $45 and the cave, abbey and mountain monastery at $67.
Routes that climb
Seven of the twelve safaris sold here say in their own listing that they go into the mountains. The other five stay low. This page separates the two groups, with live fares, durations and ratings.

Quick answer
The short answer. Of the twelve safaris here, seven name mountains in their own description and five do not. The least expensive of the seven is $45 for three hours, and it is also the most reviewed of them at 2,059 reviews and 4.9. The longest is $219 for five and a half hours in the south. One point to settle first: nothing booked here is a jeep. The vehicles named are quads, ATVs and buggies, and two of the seven describe themselves as 4x4.
Start here
Seven of twelve descriptions say the word. That count is the whole method of this page.
Crete is an island with a spine, and the ground behind the hotel strip rises almost at once. That is the appeal of this search: the route that turns away from the water. A listing photograph cannot tell you which one you are buying, so this page does something blunt. It reads the twelve descriptions the operators wrote themselves and counts which say mountains. Seven do. The other five describe coastal tracks, caves, villages, a ghost town and an olive oil factory instead. If the words are not in the listing, the route is not on the inland list.
Three of the seven go further than the single word. The day in the south is the only listing naming tiny mountain villages; the three-hour run from Hersonissos is the only one naming a mountain monastery; the half-day above Rethymno is the only one naming canyons and shallow water.
What none of them name is a particular mountain range, a plateau or a pass. The descriptions say «the mountains of Crete» and «mountain tracks», and stop there. Anyone promising you a named summit is reading something the operators did not write.
Every trip, current fare
The seven listings whose own description names the mountains, ordered by review count. Cost per hour is the fare divided by the listed duration.

Reading the table
The cheapest of them is also the most reviewed. At $45 for three hours, the run from Agia Pelagia carries 2,059 reviews at 4.9, and is the only description putting both halves of the island in one sentence: nature on the coast and in the mountains, olive oil production, a tasting, the sunset.
The most committed inland route is the half-day above Rethymno, $79 for four hours: the only description that opens with the climb itself, and the only one adding canyons and shallow water crossings.
Two listings pair the mountains with villages. The ATV safari from Georgioupolis, $67, names both together and is the only description saying riders take turns at the wheel. The safari from Kolymvari, $76, names mountain tracks, Cretan villages, forests and olive groves in one line, and is the only one offering a buggy as well as a quad.
The two monastery days differ by two hours, and $89 against $67. The five-hour one adds a Byzantine monastery, a tavern, olive oil production and a finish on the beach; the three-hour one still reaches a mountain monastery with panoramic views, a cave and a village tasting.
The highest fare is the longest day and the smallest crowd. The 4x4 day in the south, $219, names tiny mountain villages, olive groves and pines together. It carries 74 reviews at 4.9 — the fewest of the seven, worth weighing against the 2,059 behind the cheapest one.
In order of reviews
Fares, durations and ratings are the live listing figures; each line paraphrases the operator’s own description.
The most reviewed of the seven: 2,059 reviews at 4.9, and the lowest fare here. Nature on the coast and in the mountains from Agia Pelagia, olive oil production, a tasting of local products, the sunset.
1,618 reviews at 4.8. Up into the mountains of Crete on a half-day quad bike safari, through shallow waters and canyons with archaeological structures — the only listing naming either.
796 reviews at 4.9. An ATV through the mountains and the traditional villages of Crete, with stunning panoramas. The only listing that says riders take turns at the wheel.
379 reviews at 4.8. Through the wild nature of Crete: mountain tracks, charming Cretan villages, forests and olive groves. The only listing where the vehicle can be a buggy rather than a quad — two different machines.
326 reviews at 4.8. The mountains of Crete and off-road trails, a Byzantine monastery, a traditional tavern, how olive oil is made, and a finish on the beach.
278 reviews at 4.9. From Hersonissos: a cave, an off-road ride to a traditional village, local pie and coffee, and a mountain monastery with panoramic views.
74 reviews at 4.9, and the highest fare on the site. A 4x4 off-road quad safari into the unknown parts of Crete, through olive groves, pines and tiny mountain villages.
Still deciding whether a jeep or a quad is what you actually want?
Quad or jeep, compared→The other five
Five good safaris that simply are not about the high ground.
Five listings never mention mountains, and it would be easy to sell them as inland routes anyway. Here is what each says it does.
The most reviewed safari on the site — $48, 3.5 hours, 2,439 reviews at 4.9 — describes scenic landscapes, untouched nature and historic villages, from off-road routes to coastal tracks. The five-hour cave safari, $70, names off-road trails, Milatos Cave, an olive oil factory, coastal villages, lunch and a hotel transfer. The ghost town run, $49 for 220 minutes, is built around an abandoned settlement, the sunset and a shot of raki. The Bali safari, $73, goes off-road in the heart of Crete to the Cave of Melidoni and ten traditional villages. The six-hour day, $100, lists a coastal ride, a monastery, an olive tour, lunch, a cave and a swim.
Four of those five name a cave or a coastal stretch. If you want both the coast and the climb in one afternoon, the run at $45 is the only description that says so outright.

One more thing
The search changes word by word and the listings do not change at all. Nothing sold here is a jeep: all twelve name a quad, an ATV or a buggy, and two — the five-hour cave safari and the long day in the south — call themselves 4x4. Whichever vehicle word brought you here, the seven inland routes above are the same seven.
The distinction worth keeping is quad against buggy. They are different machines, and only the listing from Kolymvari at $76 names both.
Before you book
Everything on this list is something the listing itself tells you.
Seven of the twelve do. If the words are not there, the route is one of the coastal, cave or village safaris, however the photographs look.
Three hours to five and a half, from nine starting points across the island. Check the start town against where you are staying.
Only some listings name either one. Where the description does not say it, read the listing page before you pay.
One listing offers a buggy as well as a quad. The rest name a quad or an ATV.
Common questions
The inland routes here are sold as quad, ATV and buggy safaris, not jeep safaris, and two of the twelve describe themselves as 4x4. The terrain the descriptions name — mountain tracks, off-road trails, villages — is the same ground.
Seven of the twelve listings here name mountains in their own description: the coast-and-mountains tasting at $45, the half-day above Rethymno at $79, the ATV run from Georgioupolis at $67, the buggy-or-quad safari at $76, the two monastery days at $67 and $89, and the 4x4 day in the south at $219.
$45 for three hours: nature on the coast and in the mountains, an olive oil tasting and the sunset. It is also the most reviewed of the seven, at 2,059 reviews and 4.9.
Between three and five and a half hours: two run three, one runs three to three and a half, two run four, one runs five, and the day in the south runs five and a half.
One listing names them: the 4x4 day in the south at $219, driving through olive groves, pines and tiny mountain villages. Other inland listings name villages without calling them mountain villages.
Two of the seven. The three-hour safari from Hersonissos at $67 names a mountain monastery with panoramic views; the five-hour safari at $89 names a Byzantine monastery, a traditional tavern and a finish on the beach.
The coast-and-mountains tasting at $45, with 2,059 reviews at 4.9; the half-day above Rethymno is next with 1,618 at 4.8. The most reviewed safari on the site is the backland tour with 2,439, but it does not name the mountains.
